They absorb carbon and help to control the global climate, but 80% of the world's forests have already been damaged or destroyed.

Each year more than 13 million hectares of forests disappear, an area roughly as big as England.

To put it another way, a forest area the size of 35 footaball pitches is lost every minute.

They are home to 80% of all terrestrial biodiversity.

They offer access to water, agricultural productivity, energy, soil conservation and flood control.

Over 1.6 billion people worldwide - that's nearly a quarter of the current world popuation - depend on forest resources for their livelihoods and many rely on forests for food, shelter and water.

Forests affect the lives of all our people.
