Lesson 2: Conversation

Well, where shall we start? play_circle pause_circle
Shall we introduce ourselves? play_circle pause_circle
Good idea. My name's Laura and this is my brother, Jack. play_circle pause_circle
Hi. I'm Ross and this is Holly. play_circle pause_circle
Hello! Nice to meet you. play_circle pause_circle
I think this Portrait project is a great idea. play_circle pause_circle
Me, too. It sounds brilliant. play_circle pause_circle
What are we going to include? We should decide. play_circle pause_circle
The river? Interesting buildings? play_circle pause_circle
Famous people in the town? Our football team? play_circle pause_circle
Let's make a list. play_circle pause_circle
How can we all help? play_circle pause_circle
Yes, what do we all like doing? I mean what are we good at? play_circle pause_circle
I like computers and photography. I've got a video camera. play_circle pause_circle
Great! That's useful. We need equipment like that. play_circle pause_circle
I'm good at art and I love sport. play_circle pause_circle
Well, I hate sport. I prefer fashion and going shopping. play_circle pause_circle
You could do something on the new shopping center. It's the grand opening next week. play_circle pause_circle
I know! I can't wait! All those new shops! play_circle pause_circle
OK. Let's write down some ideas. Number 1: shopping center. What else? play_circle pause_circle

I live in a new apartment. It's between the park and the river. play_circle pause_circle
It sounds great. Have you got any brothers or sisters? play_circle pause_circle
Yes, I've got a brother and a sister. play_circle pause_circle
Are there many people in your family? play_circle pause_circle
I've got a grandma and grandpa, two aunts, four uncles and 8 cousins. play_circle pause_circle
Eight cousins! Lucky you! I've only got one. Are you interested in sport? play_circle pause_circle
Yes, I go swimming every week. play_circle pause_circle
Me too. Are you good at it? play_circle pause_circle
I'm quite good at it but I'm better at drawing. play_circle pause_circle
What do you draw? play_circle pause_circle
Animals and birds mostly. I like all kinds of creatures. play_circle pause_circle
I'd love to see some of your drawings. Mm … do you ever draw spiders? play_circle pause_circle
Spiders! No. Not usually. play_circle pause_circle
Good, because I really don't like them at all. play_circle pause_circle

Lesson Heading

Do you like... Art? Technology? play_circle pause_circle
Will Jones and Patsy Parker report on how these subjects meet in... play_circle pause_circle
The portrait project play_circle pause_circle
City Hall was buzzing with excitement last week. play_circle pause_circle
More than fifty enthusiastic volunteers came for the start of a arts and technology project for school students. play_circle pause_circle
Professor John Brown is running the project. play_circle pause_circle
In the project, A portrait of our town, students create a portrait of the place where they live. play_circle pause_circle
Professor Brown of Hampton University explained to them, "You must decide what to tell people about your town. You could tell them about buildings and places, or you could tell them about some of the people who live there. It's your chance, too, to give your own opinions. What is happening in your town now? How do you feel about it?" play_circle pause_circle
The students were evidently motivated by the professor's questions. play_circle pause_circle
After the first session, there was a rush for the leaflets about the project. play_circle pause_circle
Groups of boys and girls began to discuss ideas. play_circle pause_circle
In the second session, professor Brown talked about producing the portrait.” play_circle pause_circle
"You can decide what to use," he explained, "film, photography, recordings of voices, sounds and music, different kinds of writing and art. The only limit on what you can do is your own imagination." play_circle pause_circle
The students are aged from 12-16 and they come from different schools in all parts of the town. play_circle pause_circle
They are going to work in groups of 4-6. play_circle pause_circle
Most students met for the first time at City Hall. play_circle pause_circle
They had to choose who they would like to work with. play_circle pause_circle
To help students to find out about each other, professor brown put up some message boards. play_circle pause_circle
One said I like… Others said I don't like… I am interested in… play_circle pause_circle
Students were invited to respond by writing on pieces of paper and sticking them on the board. play_circle pause_circle
While they were busy writing and reading responses, Professor Brown explained that students from all over the country are creating Portraits. play_circle pause_circle
Some of them live in very big cities. play_circle pause_circle
"But they don't have to include the whole city," he said. "They can construct a portrait of their part of it. It could be just their local neighbourhood." play_circle pause_circle
We chatted to students at the message boards - a popular meeting place. play_circle pause_circle
This is great. I'm making new friends here today and I'm really enjoying it. I like making new friends! play_circle pause_circle
Reading the messages is fun. I'm interested in people and I like finding out about them. play_circle pause_circle
Fifteen-year-old Laura Hardy is the first student who volunteered to take part in the project. She's the subject of this week's... play_circle pause_circle
Patsy Parker interview play_circle pause_circle
Why did you want to do this project Laura? play_circle pause_circle
I thought it sounded interesting. We're going to meet every week to work on the project. At the end of the year, we are going to present our finished portraits. I like creating things and I like looking at things and taking pictures of them. play_circle pause_circle
Are you interested in photography? play_circle pause_circle
Yes, I am. I'm interested in film, too, and computers. I'm doing a computer animation project at school at the moment. I go to a computer club every Monday. play_circle pause_circle
Which school do you go to? play_circle pause_circle
I go to West Hill Academy. play_circle pause_circle
Have you got any brothers or sisters? play_circle pause_circle
Yes, I've got one brother, Jack. We go to the same school and he's here today, too ... somewhere, but I can't see him. He's probably looking at the message board or he's chatting to someone. He likes talking to people. play_circle pause_circle
What things do you like? play_circle pause_circle
Cartoon films and surfing the internet. play_circle pause_circle
Do you have any dislikes? play_circle pause_circle
Not really ... but I don't like going to the dentist much. play_circle pause_circle
Me neither! play_circle pause_circle
Good luck to all the students working on the project. We'll tell you how they get on later in the year. play_circle pause_circle
