Lesson 2: Conversation

Do you remember when you were little? play_circle pause_circle
Yes, of course. I used to go to my grandmother's house every day. play_circle pause_circle
Really? Why? play_circle pause_circle
Because she used to look after my while Mum was at work. play_circle pause_circle
Did you like going to her house? play_circle pause_circle
It was great. Grandma used to read stories and sing songs. And we used to make cakes together, too. play_circle pause_circle
That sounds nice. play_circle pause_circle
Yes, it was. play_circle pause_circle

Chapter 1: Grandad play_circle pause_circle
Robert was excited. He was going to stay with his grandfather at the weekend. play_circle pause_circle
Lucy, his cousin, was going to stay too. play_circle pause_circle
She was the same age as Robert and they were good friends. play_circle pause_circle
While Robert was packing his bag, the telephone rang noisily. play_circle pause_circle
Robert answered it. It was Lucy. play_circle pause_circle
"I hope we have a great weekend," said Lucy. play_circle pause_circle
"So do I," said Robert. "It's always good fun at Grandad's." play_circle pause_circle
While Robert was travelling on the bus, he thought about Grandad. play_circle pause_circle
There were two things about him that Robert and Lucy really liked. play_circle pause_circle
First, he was very, very clever. He was an inventor play_circle pause_circle
He invented lots of things, but mostly he invented new kinds of mobile phones. play_circle pause_circle
The other thing they liked was that Grandad loved history. play_circle pause_circle
His house was full of history books. play_circle pause_circle
When Robert and Lucy came to stay, Grandad told them exciting stories from history. play_circle pause_circle
The cousins loved the stories because they were true. play_circle pause_circle
They loved Grandad's tales of explorers who used to sail across the oceans and travel across deserts to distant lands. play_circle pause_circle
Robert knocked on Grandad's door. Mrs Green, the maid, opened it. play_circle pause_circle
"Hello, Robert," she said. "Come in." play_circle pause_circle
"Hello, Mrs Green," Robert said. "How are you?" play_circle pause_circle
"I'm fine," said Mrs Green. She took his bag from him. "Your grandfather is in his study." play_circle pause_circle
Robert hurried into Grandad's study. "Hello, Grandad," he began. Then he stopped in surprise. play_circle pause_circle
Grandad was sitting in an armchair. There was a big bandage on his foot. play_circle pause_circle
Grandad, what happened?" Robert asked. play_circle pause_circle
"I've hurt my ankle," Grandad said. "The doctor says I mustn't walk on it for a few days." play_circle pause_circle
"Poor Grandad. Does it hurt? I'll help you and so will Lucy. Where is she? Has she arrived yet?" play_circle pause_circle
Grandad looked worried. "I'm not sure," he said. "I think she has disappeared." play_circle pause_circle
"Disappeared?" said Robert. "What do you mean?" play_circle pause_circle
Grandad leaned towards him and whispered, "I think she has travelled back in time." play_circle pause_circle
Chapter 2: The time-travel phones play_circle pause_circle
Robert looked at Grandad, amazed. "How could Lucy have travelled back in time?" he asked. play_circle pause_circle
Grandad showed him a mobile phone. "Look at this," he said. "This is not an ordinary phone. This is my newest invention." play_circle pause_circle
Robert thought the mobile phone looked ordinary. "What's special about it?" he asked play_circle pause_circle
"Do you promise not to tell anyone?" play_circle pause_circle
"Not even Lucy?" play_circle pause_circle
"Lucy knows already." play_circle pause_circle
"Not even Mum and Dad?" play_circle pause_circle
"I'll tell them soon." play_circle pause_circle
"Okay. So what does it do?" asked Robert. play_circle pause_circle
"With this mobile phone you can travel back in time." play_circle pause_circle
"Wow!" Robert exclaimed. " Can you really do that?" play_circle pause_circle
Grandad nodded proudly. "I've worked on this invention for two years," he said. "It's ready now." play_circle pause_circle
Robert's eyes widened. "How does it work?" play_circle pause_circle
"Let me show you. You put in the date you want to visit. Then you put in the place you want to visit. Then you put in the password, Adventure." play_circle pause_circle
"Did you tell Lucy this?" play_circle pause_circle
"Yes. And now one of the time-travel phones is missing." play_circle pause_circle
"How many time-travel phones have you made?" Robert asked. play_circle pause_circle
"Four,"Grandad shook his head. "I'm worried, Robert. I think Lucy has used the missing phone to travel back in time." play_circle pause_circle
"Wow!" Robert exclaimed. "Where do you think she has gone?" play_circle pause_circle
