Lesson 2: Conversation

I've just read a fantastic book. In fact, it was so fantastic that I read it twice. play_circle pause_circle
Really? What's the name of this amazing book? play_circle pause_circle
Millie Mason - girl reporter. play_circle pause_circle
Tell me about it. play_circle pause_circle
Well, it's about a girl - Millie Mason. The police can't solve a crime but she can. play_circle pause_circle
Is it funny? play_circle pause_circle
Oh yes! It's such a funny story that I was laughing out loud. play_circle pause_circle
Who's it by? play_circle pause_circle
It's by Henry Jones. He writes such good stories that I only read books by him at the moment. play_circle pause_circle
Can I borrow it? play_circle pause_circle

Radio and television

Radio and television play_circle pause_circle
News and entertainment play_circle pause_circle
People used to read the news only in the newspapers. play_circle pause_circle
When radio was invented, they heard the news. play_circle pause_circle
When television was invented, they saw it, too. play_circle pause_circle
News programmes are popular, with lots of interviews and reports. play_circle pause_circle
Some channels show news and nothing else. play_circle pause_circle
As well as news, there is a lot of entertainment on radio and television. play_circle pause_circle
You can hear plays on the radio. play_circle pause_circle
The actors are in a studio. They speak into a microphone. play_circle pause_circle
You can't see them so you have to imagine the scene for yourself. play_circle pause_circle
A sound engineer adds sound effects. They help you to imagine the scene. play_circle pause_circle
Everything is shown to you in a TV drama and don't need to imagine the scene or what people look like. play_circle pause_circle
Sometimes the setting are fascinating places and the costumes are often beautiful. play_circle pause_circle
They make the programme very entertaining, especially when there is fast action, too. play_circle pause_circle
People enjoy chat shows in a TV studio. play_circle pause_circle
The guests are interviewed by the show's host and their conversations are usually interesting and entertaining. play_circle pause_circle
Paddy Riley hosts the chat show, Paddy's People. play_circle pause_circle
He invites several different people onto his show every week and he always includes a young person. play_circle pause_circle
This week he is interviewing an ice skater. play_circle pause_circle
My young guest this week is a champion skater who will represent his country at the next Olympics. He's only thirteen years old. Let me introduce you to Danny Green! Welcome to the show, Danny. play_circle pause_circle
Thanks, Paddy. play_circle pause_circle
Tell us about your skating, Danny. When did you start? play_circle pause_circle
When I was four. I went with my sister. We were such noisy children that Mum wanted to get rid of us both on Saturday mornings! play_circle pause_circle
Did you always like it? play_circle pause_circle
Yes I did, right from the beginning. My sister gave up after a couple of years but I carried on. play_circle pause_circle
When was you first competition? play_circle pause_circle
When I was six. play_circle pause_circle
Did you win? play_circle pause_circle
Yes. play_circle pause_circle
So a winner from the start? play_circle pause_circle
Well ... play_circle pause_circle
You're a very modest boy, Danny. play_circle pause_circle
Oh, ... am I? play_circle pause_circle
You've won five gold medals! play_circle pause_circle
Well, ... that's true ... play_circle pause_circle
And that's just in the last three years, ladies and gentlemen! We've got a picture of you, Danny, winning at the international competition last month. There it is, isn't that fantastic? How does it feel to be all alone out there with all eyes on you, Danny? Does it make you nervous? play_circle pause_circle
I'm always nervous before I start, but as soon as I hear the music and start moving, I love it. play_circle pause_circle
And we can see why, Danny, you're obviously a born champion. Good luck for the future. play_circle pause_circle
Thanks very much. play_circle pause_circle
Danny Green, ladies and gentlemen, a star to watch. Next week I'll talk to a very special young lady. The young lady is a violinist. She's the youngest solo violinist with the City Orchestra. Her name is Meg Thorp. Till then, goodbye and thanks for watching! play_circle pause_circle
