Life in the north

Life in the north play_circle pause_circle
The Sami people play_circle pause_circle
The first Sami people arrived in Europe 7,000 years ago. play_circle pause_circle
For thousands of years, they travelled across northern Europe. play_circle pause_circle
Today, Sami live in the far north of four countries: Sweden, Norway, Finland and Rissia. play_circle pause_circle
Sami call this area Sapmi. play_circle pause_circle
The reindeer herds play_circle pause_circle
In the past, the Sami were nomads and they followed the reindeer herds. play_circle pause_circle
They used the reindeer for food, clothes and tools. play_circle pause_circle
They made tents and boots from reindeer skin. play_circle pause_circle
They made coats and hats from their wool. play_circle pause_circle
They carved needles, spoons and knives from their antlers. play_circle pause_circle
Later, some Sami people stayed on the coast and became fishermen and farmers but the reindeer have always been important. play_circle pause_circle
In the Sami language there are 400 different words that describe reindeer. play_circle pause_circle
Sami still keep reindeer now but very few people follow their herds. play_circle pause_circle
They keep them in one large area. play_circle pause_circle
Some herders use snow scooters when they herd the reindeer. play_circle pause_circle
These are much faster than sledges or skis. play_circle pause_circle
Sami clothes play_circle pause_circle
The Sami people make trousers, skirts and jackets from wool cloth. play_circle pause_circle
Usually it is blue. Sometimes it is red or green. play_circle pause_circle
Their clothes have colourful borders. play_circle pause_circle
They make hats and boots from reindeer fur. play_circle pause_circle
Sami people wear this clothing on special days. play_circle pause_circle
This is their national costume and they are proud of it. play_circle pause_circle
This woman is wearing a red dress. It has a border of green and yellow. play_circle pause_circle
There is a long blue, yellow and green fringe on her dress and she is wearing silver jewellery. play_circle pause_circle
Her hat is tall with a blue, yellow and green border. play_circle pause_circle
She is wearing a belt and there is a small bag on it. play_circle pause_circle
She is wearing gloves and she is holding a small white reindeer. play_circle pause_circle
She has got long fair hair and she is smiling. play_circle pause_circle
She looks very happy and friendly. play_circle pause_circle
The Sami today play_circle pause_circle
The Sami people have changed their lives. play_circle pause_circle
Once, they were nomads. Now many Sami live in towns and villages. play_circle pause_circle
They work in hospitals, schools and factories. play_circle pause_circle
They speak other languages but there are schools where children learn their lessons in Sami play_circle pause_circle
There are newspapers, radio and TV programmes in Sami and they have their own national flag. play_circle pause_circle
More and more people visit Sami towns and villages. play_circle pause_circle
They like the Sami crafts and clothes. play_circle pause_circle
The land is beautiful in winter. play_circle pause_circle
There is snow from November to May. play_circle pause_circle
