Look at the king on his throne. play_circle pause_circle
His headdress is fantastic! play_circle pause_circle
The guards are scary. play_circle pause_circle
Their swords and spears look really sharp. play_circle pause_circle
And their shields look really heavy. play_circle pause_circle
I love that jewellery! play_circle pause_circle
Wow! It's beautiful! play_circle pause_circle
And look at that mask! It's amazing. play_circle pause_circle
That, children, is the golden mask of Chapichapi. play_circle pause_circle
It's covered in jewels. play_circle pause_circle
Oh! What's happening? play_circle pause_circle
I can't see anything. play_circle pause_circle
Switch on the lights! Switch on the lights! play_circle pause_circle
Oh, that's better. play_circle pause_circle

A message for the Inca King

A message for the Inca King play_circle pause_circle
It was before dawn when Poma heard a voice. play_circle pause_circle
"Wake up, Poma, wake up!" somebody whispered. play_circle pause_circle
Poma opened his eyes. play_circle pause_circle
In the dim moonlight, he saw the face of his old teacher. play_circle pause_circle
Poma sat up in surprise. play_circle pause_circle
"Sh!" said his teacher. "Don't speak. Get dressed and follow me." play_circle pause_circle
Hurriedly, Poma put on hid tunic. The other boys were sleeping. play_circle pause_circle
He stepped quietly past them and followed the old man outside. play_circle pause_circle
As silent as shadows they crossed the courtyard and entered the great hall. play_circle pause_circle
Poma's teacher led him towards a small doorway in one corner. play_circle pause_circle
Messengers did not usually go through it. play_circle pause_circle
The rooms behind the hall were part of the palace. play_circle pause_circle
Suddenly, the old man stopped and spoke. play_circle pause_circle
"Listen, Poma," he said. "You are the youngest messenger in the palace but nobody runs as fast as you. You are not yet seventeen but you are as brave as any man. Now, you have an important task, Come." play_circle pause_circle
Poma followed the old man through the narrow doorway and along a short passage. play_circle pause_circle
They entered a large room where lamps burned brightly. play_circle pause_circle
The golden walls glowed like the evening sun. play_circle pause_circle
Two men stood near the doorway. They were talking quietly. play_circle pause_circle
They stopped when they saw Poma. play_circle pause_circle
Their tunics were fine wool with delicate patterns of gold. play_circle pause_circle
"These are important people," thought Poma. play_circle pause_circle
A table stood in the middle of the room with a gold chair next to it . play_circle pause_circle
There were sliver cups on the table but the chair was empty. play_circle pause_circle
Poma heard his teacher say, "This is the boy, Prince Urco." play_circle pause_circle
A tall man appeared from the shadows. play_circle pause_circle
He wore a heavy cloak over his tunic. play_circle pause_circle
Bands of gold circled his head and his arms. play_circle pause_circle
A collar of gold and rare jewels was around his neck. play_circle pause_circle
He beckoned to Poma and the boy stepped forward. play_circle pause_circle
The prince looked carefully at Poma for a moment. play_circle pause_circle
"You are strong," he said, "but you must be clever, too. You must take a message to the king. You must remember every word." play_circle pause_circle
He leaned forward and spoke clearly. "Repeat" he commanded. play_circle pause_circle
Poma repeated the message. play_circle pause_circle
The prince nodded. "Now go," he said, " and do not fail." play_circle pause_circle
Poma left the room and ran back through the hall. play_circle pause_circle
He crossed the shadowy courtyard and ran out onto the road. play_circle pause_circle
Then he ran straight on, out of the city gates and towards the forest. play_circle pause_circle
"I must not fail," he repeated. "I must not fail." play_circle pause_circle
